Staffordshire Moorlands
For those unfamiliar with the area, the Staffordshire Moorlands present a wonderfully varied habitat for not only Curlews, but other endangered birds such as the Lapwing.
Curlew Country focuses on the area more or less at the centre of a triangle with the apexes being the towns of Leek, Buxton and Ashbourne (see map). The source of both the Dove and Manifold rivers are nearby, and the area supports a mixed landscape of rough moorland, pasture, meadow and woodland.
If you look at the map we will be using for "sightings", you will notice a broad "left to right" change across the local area as the high moorland gives way to the softer greens of sandstone landscape, taking on a bleached look as the land changes again to limestone. This Dark Peak/White Peak border country.
